About diabetes
Diabetes Mellitus is one of the most common diseases in the World, and is in fact not one but several diseases. According to International Diabetes Federation, 425 million people in the World were diagnosed with diabetes 2017 (diabetes atlas 1). Unfortunately IDF don´t have more specific figures for different forms of diabetes, people with type 1 diabetes is separated only in a younger group between 0-19 years, and above 20 years is all form of diabetes gathered together. It is estimated ~35 million people have type 1 diabetes and since other forms are rare, more or less the rest have type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes are, opposite to what many think, serious diseases but with certain control of glucose values, blood pressure, lipids, diet and exercise, the risks are reduced a lot. In 2015 estimated 1.6 million deaths were directly caused by diabetes globally, in 2012 another 2.2 million deaths were attributable to high blood glucose (2).
